Chiefly consisting of bills, receipts, land papers, and family letters re Ashwood Plantation. Including bill, 1 May 1862, Charleston, S.C., for 3 days' confinement of 15 slaves in Charleston Workhouse by E.M. Whaley; bills for medical treatment of slaves; and 12 Mar. 1864 and 1865, lists of slaves identified by name, including clothing and occupation. Journal, 1859-1865, re E.M. Whaley's guardianship of his niece and nephew, Sarah Abigail Whaley and Edward Clarence Whaley, including lists of identified slaves belonging to their father, Edward Whaley's estate. Account book, 1870-1873, re plantation accounts, including expenses for cultivating and selling cotton, taxes, lumber, and food, and income from sales of cotton. Unbound volume, 1871-1872, Little Edisto Island, S.C., record of Sea Island cotton planted, ginned, and shipped from Ashwood Plantation.
